Chinese Placement Evaluation

Updated 8/21/2009

Welcome to the Chinese Language Courses at UC Davis!

A mandatory Chinese Placement Evaluation is required if you are planning to take one of the program's Chinese language courses, including CHN 1, 2, 3, 1BL, 2BL, 3BL, 1CN, 2CN, 3CN, 4, 5, 6, 111, 112, 113, and 120 (you don't need to take the placement test for taking Chinese literature courses). If you did not take any Chinese language courses in the past two years at UC Davis or you have learned Chinese with a Study Abroad Program in Mainland China or Taiwan recently, you must take a Chinese language placement test for enrolling in a Chinese language class. According to the test result, you will be directed to the appropriate course for your level. If you have already registered for a class but are placed into a different course, you must switch to a class as directed. Your registration status will be checked at the beginning of each quarter and those who do not meet the placement pre-requisite will be asked to leave the class.

Please also be advised that the placement test only determines which course you should take. It does not guarantee your enrollment in the course. Your enrollment is governed by the school registration policies and procedures. Whether you can enroll in a course depends on how many students will drop or switch from that course.

For Incoming Students in the Fall
Fall Quarter incoming students can take the Chinese Placement Test which is regularly scheduled one or two days before the instruction starts in the Language Learning Center (the basement of Olson Hall). The Fall 2009 schedule is

  • September 22nd, Tuesday at 10:30-12:30pm and 1:30-4:30pm

No appointment is needed (just walk in on time to do it). But you need to come early since the test may take more than one hour.

For Current UCD Students
Current UCD Students are strongly encouraged to do the test with one of the Chinese language instructors during his/her office hours in a regular quarter (excluding final exam weeks, school holidays, and summer). You can walk in to take it. No appointment is needed. But you need to come early since the test may take more than one hour. To find out the instructors' office hours, see the Faculty page (those under "non-senate faculty").

If you missed taking the test during the regular quarters, you can do it together with incoming students at the very beginning of the Fall Quarter (see the schedule above).
