Chinese Placement Evaluation

Updated 1/25/08

Welcome to the Chinese language classes at UC Davis. To help you plan ahead, I'm writing this to reminder you of our mandatory Chinese Placement Test requirement. If you did not take any Chinese language course in the past two years at UC Davis, you must take a Chinese language placement evaluation. According to the evaluation result, you will be directed to the appropriate course for your level. If you have already registered for a class but are placed into a different course, you must switch to your class as directed. Your registration status will be checked at the beginning of each quarter and those who do not meet the placement pre-requisite will be asked to leave the class.

Please also be advised that the placement test only determines which course you should take. It does not guarantee your enrollment in the course. Whether you can enroll in a course depends on how many students will drop or switch from that course. Your enrollment is governed by the school registration policies and procedures. We strongly encourage students who want to enroll in Chinese language courses to move quickly. First take the placement test and then register for the course, as the test results indicates, as early as possible. Depending on your Chinese competence, the placement evaluation may take 30 to 80 minutes. You do not need to prepare for the evaluation.

To take the placement exam, please make an appointment with any Non-Senate Faculty during their office hours.

For more information about the placement evaluation, please visit the Chinese Program website at http://chinese.ucdavis.edu and read the FAQ page.
