Chinese Placement Evaluation

Updated 6/16/2008

Welcome to the Chinese language classes at UC Davis in Fall 2008. To help you plan ahead, I'm writing to remind you of the mandatory Chinese Placement Test requirement. If you did not take any Chinese language course in the past two years at UC Davis or you are learning Chinese with a Study Abroad Program in Mainland China or Taiwan this summer, you must take a Chinese language placement evaluation for enrolling in a Chinese class in the fall. According to the evaluation result, you will be directed to the appropriate course for your level. If you have already registered for a class but are placed into a different course, you must switch to a class as directed. Your registration status will be checked at the beginning of each quarter and those who do not meet the placement pre-requisite will be asked to leave the class.

Please also be advised that the placement test only determines which course you should take. It does not guarantee your enrollment in the course. Your enrollment is governed by the school registration policies and procedures. Whether you can enroll in a course depends on how many students will drop or switch from that course.

The Fall 08 Chinese Placement Test is scheduled for September 24, Wednesday, 9:00 am-11:30am and 1:00pm-3:30pm in Language Learning Center (the basement of Olson Hall). Depending on your Chinese competence, the placement evaluation may take 30 to 80 minutes. You do NOT need to prepare for the evaluation. Nor appointment is needed either (but just walk in to do it).

For more information about the placement evaluation, please visit the Chinese Program website at http://chinese.ucdavis.edu and read the FAQ page.
