Description of course: A continuation of Chinese 1. Further developing elementary level skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in more everyday communication settings. Building upon Chinese 1, continue to introduce basic vocabulary and characters as well as core grammar, and further train pronunciation. The Chinese 1, 2, 3 course series are for students who have had no or very limited prior exposure to the Chinese language.

Course format: Lecture/Discussion - 5 hours; Laboratory - 1 hour.

Description of course: A continuation of Chinese 1BL. Further trainings on all the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphases on standard Mandarin pronunciation, Chinese characters, and discourse level conversations in more communication settings. The Chinese 1BL, 2BL, 3BL course series are designed for students who already have elementary level ability to understand or speak Mandarin Chinese.

Chinese 2CN - Mandarin for Cantonese Speakers (5 Units)

Description of course: The second quarter of the one-year CN course sequence for students who have very limited ability to speak Mandarin Chinese but already have basic comprehension and speaking skills in Cantonese or another Chinese dialect as well as certain exposure to reading and/or writing in Chinese. Continue to train fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin with the emphasis on accuracy of pronunciation and fluency of speaking. Depending on their reading and writing competence, students will be placed into different levels of Chinese courses at the end of the one-year CN course series (CHN 1CN, 2CN, and 3CN).

Description of course: : Continuation of Chinese 4. Further training of intermediate-level communication skills in spoken and written Mandarin in more contexts, based on language skills developed in course 4.
Chinese 005 is designed for students who have successfully completed the Chinese 004 class or who have previous exposure to Mandarin equivalent to four quarters of Chinese course based on the result of a placement test. This course employs a holistic and communicative approach in teaching the four skills in language, with a strong emphasis on the practical usage of the acquired knowledge in daily life. As an inseparable element of language learning, Chinese culture will be introduced, associated with the topics in each lesson.

Chinese 107 - Traditional Chinese Fiction (in English) (4 Units)

Description of course: Fiction, some literary historians say, developed “late” in Chinese history, but the Chinese have told stories for millennia. We will explore in this course the most important early narrative forms and their best-known examples, which exerted an enormous influence over later imperial and even contemporary literature. In our readings, we will encounter fox-spirits, miracle workers, sage emperors, enchanting women, filial sons, devoted clergy, and evil ministers. We will examine their tales mostly from a literary perspective, focusing on thematic and structural matters. GE credit: ArtHum?, Div, Wrt.

Description of course: Continuation of Chinese 111. Further developing the four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and preparing students to function more effectively and communicate more accurately in Modern Standard Mandarin-speaking environments. Students read both dialogues and articles pertaining to a variety of issues in contemporary China and discuss the ethical, moral, aesthetic, social, and cultural concerns of the Chinese that relate to these issues. Students also study strategies for moving between simplified and traditional Chinese characters.

Chinese 115 - Introduction to Classical Chinese (4 Units)

Description of course: This course seeks to enable students familiar with modern Chinese and the fundamentals of classical Chinese to improve their facility with the classical language and enhance their knowledge of traditional literary genres. Texts read will range from Han dynasty historical works, Six Dynasties anecdotal literature, and Tang occasional texts, as well as the shi and fu genres. Historical and cultural issues will be discussed as they arise.

Chinese 120 - Advanced Chinese (4 Units)

Description of course: Selected authentic readings from various genres (literature, newspapers, TV and Movies etc) to develop advanced skills in reading, writing, aural comprehension, and formal/professional speech in Mandarin Chinese. While progressing in a variety of language skills, students will have time to learn about Chinese society and culture, especially those sociocultural issues reflected in the language used in learning materials.
