Description of course: This is an introduction to the Mandarin Chinese language. This course aims to develop elementary level skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in everyday communication settings. Fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters will be introduced. The course is for students who have had no or very limited prior exposure to the Chinese language.

Course format: Lecture/Discussion - 5 hours; Laboratory - 1 hour.

Chinese 1BL - Accelerated Written Chinese (5 Units)

Description of course: This course is designed for students who already have elementary-level ability to understand or speak Mandarin Chinese. Trainings on all the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphases on standard Mandarin pronunciation, Chinese characters, and discourse level conversations.The Chinese 1BL, 2BL, and 3BL course series are designed for students who already have elementary level ability to understand or speak Mandarin Chinese.

Chinese 1CN - Mandarin for Cantonese Speakers (5 Units)

Description of course: A beginning Mandarin Chinese class designed for students who do not understand Mandarin Chinese but already have basic comprehension and speaking skills in Cantonese or another Chinese dialect as well as certain exposure to reading and/or writing in Chinese. While all the fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin will be trained, the emphasis will be on Mandarin pronunciation. Depending on their reading and writing competence, students will be placed into different levels of Chinese courses at the end of the one-year CN course series (Chinese 1CN, 2CN, and 3CN).

Course format: Lecture/Discussion - 5 hours.

Description of course: This course is designed to convey a feeling for what China has experienced in the twentieth century. There will be reading and discussion of short stories and novels and viewing of two films. No knowledge of the Chinese language is required. GE credit: ArtHum, Div, Wrt.

Description of course: Building on Chinese 6/3BL, further developing the four communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and preparing students to function more effectively and communicate more accurately in Modern Standard Mandarin-speaking environments. Students read both dialogues and articles pertaining to a variety of issues in contemporary China and discuss the ethical, moral, aesthetic, social, and cultural concerns of the Chinese that relate to these issues. Students also study strategies for moving between simplified and traditional Chinese characters.

Chinese 114 - Introduction to Classical Chinese: Confucius (4 Units)

Description of course: This course aims to introduce students proficient in modern Chinese to the language employed in traditional China for most official, documentary, scholarly, and belle lettristic Chinese literature. Our readings will range from pre-Han philosophical texts to Han historiographical and anecdotal literature. Special attention will be given to mastering basic grammar and syntax. Historical and cultural issues will be discussed as they arise.

Description of course:Selected authentic readings from various genres (literature, newspapers, TV and Movies etc) to develop advanced skills in reading, writing, aural comprehension, and formal/professional speech in Mandarin Chinese. While progressing in a variety of language skills, students will have time to learn about Chinese society and culture, especially those sociocultural issues reflected in the language used in learning materials.
